Lyceum Speaker Series: Revolvers and Pistolas, Vaqueros and Caballeros
Author, educator, and librarian D.H. Figueredo sets out to discredit the myths and falsehoods of the American West by chronicling the cultural perceptions that led to historical inaccuracies in his lecture on Thursday, March 19, at 11:30 a.m., as part of Lone Star College-Montgomery’s Lyceum Speaker’s Series. The lecture, which is free to the public, will take place in the Music Hall (Building H), on the LSC-Montgomery campus. In his book, “Revolvers and Pistolas, Vaqueros and Caballeros,” Figueredo tells through spellbinding accounts, chapters that address the legends behind the caballeros, Mexican culture in the Old West, and the search for cities of gold in the southwest. Arranged chronologically and thematically, the book examines how popular culture diminished the role of the Mexican vaqueros and illustrates how the image of the Anglo cowboy became the iconic symbol of the Old West.

Human Library
The Human Library attempts to challenge prejudice by facilitating a conversation between two people: Books and Readers. Books are volunteers who have either been subjected to discrimination themselves or represent groups or individuals within society that are at risk of suffering from stereotype, stigma, prejudice or discrimination. Living Books often have personal experiences of discrimination or social exclusion that they are willing to share with Readers. Most importantly, Books give Readers permission to enter into dialogue with them, in the hope that their perspectives and experiences will challenge commonly held perceptions and stereotypes and therefore affect the attitudes and behaviors of wider society. http://www.lonestar.edu/human-library.htm
