Electronic book readers are nothing new this holiday season, and are still a top notch gift choice. The prices have decreased, the features have increased. More and more ebooks are available for free from public and academic libraries, as well (see a list of local collections available below). The tech blog Mashable recently featured this guide to making an informed and educated choice when buying a electronic book reader. The article covers the basic features of ereaders, describes the variety of models available, and recommends the best picks.

Student Book Club Discussion
Join LSC-CyFair librarians in LRNC 215 for book discussions. The first 5 students to register will receive free books! This month's book is Room by Ellen Donoghue: To five-year-old Jack, Room is the world... It's where he was born, it's where he and his Ma eat and sleep and play and learn. There are endless wonders that let loose Jack's imagination - the snake under Bed that he constructs out of eggshells, the imaginary world projected through the TV, the coziness of Wardrobe beneath Ma's clothes, where she tucks him in safely at night, in case Old Nick comes. Room is home to Jack, but to Ma, it's the prison where she's been held since she was nineteen - for seven long years. Through her fierce love for her son, she has created a life for him in that eleven-by-eleven-foot space. But Jack's curiosity is building alongside her own desperation - and she knows that Room cannot contain both indefinitely..

Paul Mariani Poetry Reading and Film Discussion
Lone Star College-Montgomerys Writers in Performance kicks off its fall
series with Paul Mariani, a world-renown, award-winning author who will read
selections of his poetry on Thursday, September 15, at 7 p.m., in the colleges
library (Building F).
Then to continue his presentation, Mariani will show clips of the film, The
Broken Tower, which is based on his written biography of the iconic poet
Hart Crane, on Friday, September 16, at 6 p.m., in the Recital Hall (Building
H). Mariani will discuss the biography and his collaboration to adapt a script
for the film with James Franco, the films starring actor and producer/director.
Mariani is the author of more than 200 reviews and essays, four critical studies,
a spiritual memoir, 10 books, six volumes of poetry, and five biographies of
poets including Crane, William Carlos Williams, John Berryman, Robert Lowell,
and most recently, Gerald Manley Hopkins.
All his written biographies have been listed as Notable Books by
the New York Times, and his biography of Williams was short-listed for the American
Book Award.
Mariani has been awarded two fellowships from The Guggenheim Foundation, two
from the National Endowment for the Humanities, and one from the National Endowment
for the Arts. In 2009, Mariani was awarded the John Ciardi Award for Lifetime
Achievement in Poetry.
For more than 30 years, Mariani taught English at the University of Massachusetts.
Since 2000, he has served as a chair in the English department at Boston College.
The goal of the Writers in Performance series is to bring thought-provoking
literature and cultural diversity to the campus of LSC-Montgomery and the surrounding
community. The series events are made possible by the partnership between
the Montgomery County Literary Arts Council, LSC-Montgomery Library, the Conroe
Commission on the Arts and Culture, Good Books in the Woods, LSC-Montgomerys
Academy for Lifelong Learning, and SWIRL, LSC-Montgomerys magazine of
student art and writing.

She returns to Atlanta to spend time with her granddaughter Zora, recently undone by her peripheral role in a splashy murder case, and to check on her family house. Josephine is hoping to keep Zora's trust while steering her away from Zora's father's tragic bout with alcohol. After seeing the cracked-out wreckage of her stretch of Atlanta's West End, Josephine also embarks on a plan with four other women to fix up her vandalized manse, a plan that includes the squatter she discovers there, Victor Causey. The plot is predictable but satisfying, and Josephine's voice comes through movingly throughout.HCPL - Octavia Fields Branch1503 South HoustonHumble, TX 77338281-446-3377
