Featured Program

Wednesday, March 23, 2016, 3:00 PM - 5:00:00 PM
Join the MCMLS Genealogy department for the first workshop in a series on the                    Genealogical Proof Standard. The Genealogical Proof Standard (GPS), established by the Board for Certification of Genealogists, is the standard for establishing genealogy proof set for professional genealogy researchers, but you don’t have to be a professional genealogist to benefit from adopting the GPS into your research. Part one will cover an overview of the GPS, what the  Genealogical Proof Standard is, why is it important, and what you can do today to incorporate the standard into your research. Also covered will be information about conducting a reasonably exhaustive search. Registration is Required. Please contact the Genealogy Department at 936-788-8363 x6249 or stop by in person.

Back in Time: Historical Fiction Book Club
The 19th Wife by David Ebershoff. Two distinct eras in the history of polygamy share time in this compelling novel, which is narrated by two very different people. First, there's Ann Eliza Young, the 19th wife of Mormon patriarch Brigham Young, who in 1875 left her husband (and therefore her church) and embarked on a crusade to end polygamy. Then there's Jordan, a 20-year-old in the present day who at 14 was cast out of the fundamentalist Mormon sect in which he'd been raised. His mother, also a 19th wife, has been accused of murdering her husband, and so he's returned to his hometown to help.

Books without Borders
Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Adichie’s “remarkable novel is partly an immigrant experience narrative, partly pointed social commentary, and partly a love story. Ifemelu and Obinze fell in love as teenagers in 1990s Lagos, Nigeria, when the country was under military dictatorship… ‘Witty, wry, and observant, Adichie is a marvelous storyteller who writes passionately about the difficulty of assimilation and the love that binds a man, a woman, and their homeland.’” – Library Journal review excerpt

Human Library
The Human Library attempts to challenge prejudice by facilitating a conversation between two people: Books and Readers. Books are volunteers who have either been subjected to discrimination themselves or represent groups or individuals within society that are at risk of suffering from stereotype, stigma, prejudice or discrimination. Living Books often have personal experiences of discrimination or social exclusion that they are willing to share with Readers. Most importantly, Books give Readers permission to enter into dialogue with them, in the hope that their perspectives and experiences will challenge commonly held perceptions and stereotypes and therefore affect the attitudes and behaviors of wider society. NOTE: location is in the LSC-Kingwood Student Conference Center Atrium.
